The water level of Lake Banook, as well as Lake Micmac, has been lowered to make way for a new sewer line. Over the past few weeks, volunteers with Clean Nova Scotia have relocated many of the native Nova Scotian mussels living in the lake to deeper water, saving them from exposure and “certain death.” The mussels will be returned to where they were found once the water level is back to normal in the spring.

Moving more than 2,000 mussels in Lake Banook took more muscles than you would think.

Clean Nova Scotia and Bob Rutherford, a biologist specializing in aquatic habitat protection and restoration, were concerned that native Nova Scotian mussels that call Lake Banook home would be exposed and die now that the lake has been lowered to allow for the installation of a new sewer line.

Although these freshwater bivale molluscs are not usually harvested for food, they do help to maintain the level of ecological integrity of our lakes. They also serve as a food source for many animals and birds.  (more)  20/11/08 11:23 AM

How necessary is a third harbour crossing?
It's good there's a debate now underway on the need for a third Halifax Harbour crossing. It allows us to have a voice in shaping the future look and need for public transportation in our city because, let's face it, these days the morning and afternoon commutes can be agonizingly slow. As our city grows, so does traffic gridlock. What used to take under half an hour from the suburbs is now 45 minutes or longer.

Reaction from the citizens of HRM has been mixed thus far to the possibility of either another bridge or a tunnel. The estimated price tag of $1 billion to $1.5 billion is a scary thought, but to those enduring the increasingly lengthy daily commute to and from home and work, it's worth the investment.  (more)  20/11/08 11:30 AM

Computers can be all that you want them to be with the right accessories - Andrew D. Wright (Mousepad) Post a comment
A computer is an Anything Box of near-limitless potential that can be accessorized to meet the user's needs. And just like in the fashion world, the right accessory can sometimes make all the difference.

Do you have to carry information to and from different computers? From postage-stamp size Secure Digital cards to gum-stick size USB flash drives, large data storage has never been more portable.  (more)  20/11/08 10:49 AM

No doubt about it - J.L. Ilsley is back Post a comment
Doubts from friends. Doubts from strangers. Doubts from foes. Doubts from even some of their own classmates. All for naught.

No doubt about it.

"There were tons of people who thought we wouldn't even win a game or that we'd drop out before the end of the season," said Duncan Coady, a Grade 10 student at J.L. Ilsley High School in Spryfield. "We proved an awful lot of people wrong."  (more)  20/11/08 10:49 AM

How to help your daughter navigate social cliques Post a comment
Q:My daughter seems to have a love-hate relationship with cliques. She wants to be in the popular crowd, but she acts like she loathes them at the same time. I am not sure how to help.

A:Cliques are complicated! Adolescent novels, TV shows and movies normalize and glamorize rather than stigmatize the idea of cliques. In fact, in these shows, the most popular girl may be the least likeable by grown-up standards. I think the meaning of the word "popular" has changed over the past few decades. It used to mean the girl that had the most friends and that everyone liked. Today, it may mean something more like the most influential girl, or the most powerful girl in the group, but she also may be the most feared, rather than the most likeable one.  (more)  20/11/08 10:49 AM
